Half Moon Bay Hires New Deputy City Manager

Half Moon Bay, CA – Half Moon Bay’s City Manager Magda González announced today the hiring of Mr. Matthew Chidester as the City’s new Deputy City Manager. Mr. Chidester’s appointment comes after an exhaustive, months-long process with an executive search firm, and careful consideration and vetting of a number of qualified candidates interested in filling the vacant position. He is scheduled to begin his new role with Half Moon Bay on July 18, 2017.

Matthew has demonstrated his tireless commitment to community through his many accomplishments in the public sector,” said Ms. González. “We’re thrilled to gain his expertise and talent, his dedication to service, and his creative and pragmatic approach to what makes a great community, and what is important to the people who live and work here.”

Mr. Chidester comes to Half Moon Bay with deep experience in the wide variety of projects, budgets, programs, and issues at the County level of local government. His current position is with the San Mateo County Manager’s office, where he serves as Principal Management Analyst overseeing development of the County’s $2.6 billion annual budget. This critical role entails supporting and providing oversight and coordination among the County’s many departments. At the start of his nearly 14 years with San Mateo County, he was Business Manager for the Airports Division. Mr. Chidester has been involved in leadership positions with a number of coastside projects including the Coastside Clinic remodel and the Moss Beach Park acquisition, and he represented the County on the Half Moon Bay Library Technical Advisory Team.

Mr. Chidester has deep roots in the community, having been raised on the coastside and graduating from Half Moon Bay High School. “I have a strong connection to Half Moon Bay and the coastside, and a great appreciation for this unique and diverse community,” said Mr. Chidester. “I’m very excited to have the opportunity to work here and be an integral part of Half Moon Bay’s promising future. Fostering extensive engagement with the community, prudently managing resources, and effectively delivering the services that this community needs and deserves are City values which I share, and which set the tone for the work I want to do here.”

Mr. Chidester holds an ABA in Business Administration from College of San Mateo, and a BSBA in Management from Hawaii Pacific University. He also participated in the Stanford University Local Governance Summer Institute as well as a number of other executive and leadership training programs. He is active in the International City/County Management Association and the Municipal Managers Association of Northern California.
