The City requires residential, commercial and industrial property owners, occupants or operators to contract with Republic Services  888.442.2666 Recycle Works website

State law (AB 341) mandates recycling at businesses that generate 4 or more cubic yards of waste per week and at multi-family dwellings of 5 or more units. 

Construction & Demolition Debris Recycling

Project valued in excess of $5,000, requires a Construction and Demolition Debris Waste Management Plan submitted to City Hall for review.

  • Collects mixed paper, cardboard, and bottles and cans in a single container
  • Republic Services' commercial recycling service is provided with garbage service
  • Green Business Certification though San Mateo County’s Green Business Program

Residential Recycling & Disposal

Hazardous and Electronic Waste Recycling/Disposal

It is illegal to dispose of hazardous waste San Mateo County’s RecycleWorks maintains an excellent website of resources

  • Household batteries and cell phones in zip locked bag on top of their recycling cart
    • No automotive batteries
    • Lithium batteries must be taped and cell phones must be wrapped in paper before being placed in the plastic bag.
  • Free pickup of electronics as part of its on-call cleanups 650.592.2411.
  • Ocean Shore Hardware accepts batteries, small printer toner cartridges, CD’s and DVD’s, and cell phones. The store also accepts fluorescent light bulbs and latex-based paint.

  • Ox Mountain Landfill on Highway 92 accepts used motor oil, oil filters, and antifreeze, but call 650.726.1819
