Officials Respond to Recent Gang Activity in the City of Half Moon Bay

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office along with Council Members of the City of Half Moon Bay will hold a Community Meeting to address gangs and graffiti in light of a shooting involving gang members on August 14, 2011.    Gangs and gang activity are a common and complex problem for communities throughout this country.  In order to combat this problem, communities must come together and get involved to provide alternatives and solutions to this complex social issue.

Mayor Naomi Patridge and members of the Half Moon Bay City Council are committed to effectively combating this issue and mobilizing the community to get involved. The Mayor recently remarked,  “I am pleased to be working so closely with the Sheriff’s Office and taking this opportunity to better educate ourselves about how we can partner with law enforcement to stop criminals.”

San Mateo County Sheriff Greg Munks has long recognized the need to dedicate resources, even in troubling economic times, to combat gang violence.    Those efforts include enforcement through the Countywide Gang Task Force, education through the schools, community meetings, and citizen’s police academies. Providing alternatives to gangs through concerted educational efforts and programs such as the very successful Sheriff’s Activities League (SAL) are also fundamental. Sheriff Munks said, “We will do everything in our power to thwart gang violence and the roots of gang behavior on the Coastside.  This behavior will not be tolerated.”

All programs are offered in both English & Spanish Languages.  These programs and other topics will be discussed at the Community Meeting:

Spanish Language translators will be present to answer questions and provide information.  All Coastside residents are encouraged to attend.
