Early Morning Fire Extinguished by Sheriff's Deputies

Release Date: October 31, 2011
SMSO Case #11-3785

EARLY MORNING FIRE EXTINGUISHED BY SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES

Half Moon Bay, California: On Sunday morning at 3:40 AM, Deputy Sheriff Chris Laughlin was on routine patrol in the area of Highway One at Seymour Street when he saw large amounts of smoke in the air that appeared to be coming from an unknown area just east of his location. He located the source of the smoke at a commercial building complex located at 840 Main Street.  He found the rear of the building was on fire, fully engulfed. The complex contained three separate businesses, Coastside Dentistry, Ellen Joseph Gallery and Main Street Hair Design.

Deputy Laughlin notified County Communications of his findings and requested Fire respond to his location. Coastal Deputies also responded to the scene to control vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

While waiting for Fire personnel to arrive, Deputy Laughlin and Deputy John Sanchez used fire extinguishers from their patrol vehicles to control the spread of the fire. They extinguished most of the visible flames; however Fire personnel later located some internal fire areas that had to be extinguished.

Fire personnel did not find anything suspicious and the fire is believed to be the result of an electrical problem.
